A journey begins Empty A journey begins

Post by Arata Mizushima Mon May 22, 2017 9:00 am

It was a morning like any other in Syrup Village. Most of the residents were already up and about working or going about their daily lives but there was one man who was just waking up. Not being an early riser, he stretched out his arms and let out a long yawn. The sun's rays came in through the window and shone on his face to the point that he could not ignore it any longer. Arata rolled over to his right side away from the window and let out another yawn,'I should get up, I guess. Today is the last day, huh?' Tomorrow he would be starting his new life as a pirate and setting sail out into the world. There were so many things that he wanted to see out there that just made him burst with excitement but at the same time he was quite sad to leave this village that he has lived in for 19 years. Arata wasn't planning to spend this day in any special way and just go about his life normally. Now that he was fully awake, he got out of bed and dressed himself before going to the kitchen to have breakfast. On the table was some food left for him so he sat down and started eating. His parents, just like most of the other residents, were already out of the house and occasionally they would leave him food like this or he would have to make it himself to have something warm.

While eating he let his thoughts wander,'Starting tomorrow I'll always have to make my food or buy...That goes for having a place to sleep too.' Although being travelling like this would be fun and all Arata had hoped that he would be able to find some companions to travel with maybe a crew even. A pirate without a crew wasn't much of a pirate and especially a captain. Being done with his breakfast he got up and washed the dish before going to the bathroom to wash his face and head out. Once outside, Arata took a deep breath in and stretched out before letting out a sigh. He began walking east and out of the village to a field which had a large number of crops growing. His family was tasked with tending to one of the plots of the field and since the season was just right it gave them a lot to do. He helped out his parents as much as he could but he didn't exactly get paid directly. Instead, the village head gave his parents a bit of extra money whenever he helped out and by sharing that money between the three of them it helped them to get by better. After doing this for so long Arata didn't exactly look forward to it but thought of it as some extra knowledge and a new skill so he didn't mind.

It was his mother that noticed him first and smiled as she looked at him,'Oh, Arata you finally decided to join us. Should you really be helping us though on your last day here?' He walked towards his parents and got some tools to work with and began helping them,'Yup, awake at last. Helping isn't a big deal, really. Apart from packing I don't have much to do to prepare for my journey. To begin with I don't have that many things to take. Only the necessities.' His mother nodded at his answer,'If you say so. Your help is always welcome.' Arata didn't really want to have to talk a lot about his departure because it made him sad but he couldn't help asking, 'Will you be fine without me?' Both of his parents chuckled at his question and his father spoke up,'Of course we will. We were fine before you started helping us so we will be fine after you leave too. You don't have to worry about us. You can't be leaving with doubts.' He was glad to hear this and knew his father was right about because if he had doubts it might tempt him to return which he couldn't do. Arata didn't know when the next time he returns would be or even if he would return. There were so many possibilities that could happen but no one know what would actually happen. He then continued working until a bit past noon since his parents didn't want him to be on the field all day. They would usually do this but sometimes he would stay since there wasn't much to do in the village anyway. However, since this was his last day he agreed and decided to head back to the village and spend some time with the people he knew so well. Everyone would surely miss him so he at least wanted to spend some time with as most people as he could.

A journey begins Empty Re: A journey begins

Once Arata reached the village he looked around but noticed that it was emptier than usual. Those that he did see seemed to avoid him by saying they were busy. Was this because he was going to leave the village or was it the fact that he was now a pirate. He knew that being called a pirate gets people a lot of hate but all the villagers knew him well so they knew he wasn’t a bad person. Looking at the situation it looked like he would just go home and try not to think about it though before he could the village blacksmith approached him and spoke,’Hey Arata, can you come over to the store? I’ve got something to show you.’ He nodded in response,’Sure.

Even though his works couldn’t compare to many of the city blacksmiths they did have some buyers from smaller stores. Arata was on quite good terms with the smith too because he would always let him train in his backyard. Once they arrived the blacksmith quickly went to fetch something from his room and came back with what looked like a sheathed sword. The hilt and the sheath were both black though the sheath also had red spots going down it. The blacksmith smiled and gave it to him,’This is for you. You are a pirate now so you can’t set sail unarmed, can you? Take care of it. I used my best materials to make it. You could say it is my best work so far.’ Arata took the sword and unsheathed it slightly. It really did feel like this sword was made of all his spirit and effort. He would surely put this to good use,’Thank you. It’s amazing! Can I go and practice with it?’ The blacksmith chuckled,’Of course you can. It is yours after all.

Arata went out the back and unsheathed the sword fully and laid the sheath on the ground. This sword was much heavier than the wooden sword he usually trained with so he had to get used to it before getting in a fight. First, he started off by swinging the blade around as much as he could. Obviously, fighting with a sword was much more than just swinging a piece of metal around but he wanted to get used to the weight before he tried anything else. Out of all the weapons in the blacksmiths store he found that he liked swords the most. Arata thought that fighting with a sword was much easier and more flexible compared to a lance for example. Left, right, diagonal, draw back and stab. The motions seemed so fluid as he swung but of course he was far from being a master. Most of his training was done out of his own experience though occasionally he would get some tips from the blacksmith. Since he was one of the strongest people in his village, he got used to the weight bit by bit and thus decided to move on to working on his stance.

Arata started off by doing a kendo stance and doing a few swings. By holding his sword with two hands it would make his swings much stronger but at the same time having two hands busy could become an inconvenience. This was only the beginning so he didn’t know how his style would progress in the future. He definitely wanted to use his other hand to do something else like wield a pistol or a second sword. At this point in time, his accuracy would be pretty bad so he didn’t even try to go that far. He also wanted to be able to do something with his legs too because as a swordsman the biggest vulnerability is his legs. In the likely possibility of his sword breaking someday, he would be left without a way to fight back. That’s why he wanted to turn his whole body into a weapon and be ready in any circumstance.

Footwork also played an important part in sword fighting so as he was swinging in his kendo stance he moved around for example practicing dodges, side steps or spins. One weakness he could see in the kendo stance is that it tired him out more than using one hand. Since the swings were stronger in this stance he had to put more effort and force behind each attack. Another thing is this stance would not be good when going up against a group of enemies and was better one on one. Being satisfied with his kendo stance he switched back to a one-handed stance and began doing the same thing as with his kendo stance. Using a one-handed stance made him a bit more agile and more flexible in the way he spins. When outnumbered this could be the factor that saves his life. Even though his slashes were slightly weaker, but they were still a force to be reckoned with. Besides, even if they weren’t as strong he would still aim for fatal spots making them just as deadly either way.

After this, he trained on the dummies to be able to have a proper target rather than just swinging at thin air. The more training he got the better since he didn’t know what kind of perils awaited him in the wide world. His current strength was probably nothing compared to some people in the rest of East Blue but he wanted to explore the world so there was no rush. Each island would definitely have enough people for Arata to hone his skills. He kept training until the sky had a reddish tint and the sun was now setting. He sheathed his sword and attached it to his belt,’Hopefully this will be enough to be at the starting point.’ He went back into the store but noticed that it was empty and instead found a note to make sure to close up the store once he was done. Arata did as the note said and headed home where his parents would most likely be preparing dinner. The village was now completely empty which he found very weird but decided to ignore for now.

The moment he walked through his house door he heard a loud ‘Surprise!!!’ and looked at the source only to see all the villagers bundled up in his house smiling. Arata was shocked by this but things started to make sense now about why the village was empty the whole day. It wasn’t his birthday or anything but it was a farewell party. Arata smiled,’Thanks guys. You didn’t need to, really.’ His parents then sighed,’You thought we would let you leave just like that? The next time you return here you will be a world infamous pirate. We need to celebrate the start of your journey. Everyone in the village pitched on so we have a feast ready for you! All you need to do is sit and enjoy!’ And thus, the partying began. Arata got to talk with everyone from the village and there really was plenty of food for everyone. It was truly a feast worthy of a king…maybe even the Pirate King. Everyone was enjoying themselves and there wasn’t even a hint of sadness in anyone. This moment was meant to be happy and it would be something he would remember for a very long time. Later, during the evening all the villagers gave him all sorts of gifts according to what they were able to afford. He was truly happy that they put all of their effort into this. It made him proud to have lived in this village.

A journey begins Empty Re: A journey begins

Post by Arata Mizushima Tue May 23, 2017 7:06 pm

Due to Arata needing to wake up early, the part ended right about midnight so he could get some sleep. Since he trained for a bit longer than expected he still hasn’t packed himself for the journey which meant he had to get up earlier than planned since the sun only just began to rise. Sleepily, Arata got out of bed and got out everything he needed for the journey and put it on the bed. In the corner of his room stood a chest in which he will be storing everything. Although, it wasn’t the best idea as someone might steal the chest thinking it’s treasure but this was the most convenient way to transport his stuff as he didn’t have a ship. He neatly tried to fit everything in to have some spare space as he still needed to fit in a box of food supplies.

To get this he went to the kitchen and packed anything that would be useful which was mostly canned food as meat would spoil in sailing conditions. With food supplies in his hand, Arata returned to his room to pack it in the chest and then locked it with a key before getting dressed and putting it in his pocket,’That should be everything.’ He then returned to the kitchen to make himself his last breakfast, though it was mostly leftovers from the party, and slowly ate it. He cherished every bite of it which made it taste even better than yesterday. After he was done, he washed the dish and returned his room to finish up packing. On the back of his belt was a sheathed hunting knife, on his left hip was a sword, on his right hip was a money pouch which everyone also contributed to, in his left pocket was the key to the chest and in his right pocket was a folded-up map and a compass.

Arata let out a sigh and took the chest before leaving his house. From his house, he had to go south through the village to reach the port, if it could be called a port, where his boat was waiting for him. Once he reached the port, he looked at his boat which was big enough to fit two people with some extra space while on top of the mast was a plain black flag. He decided that until Arata recruited his first crew member he would hold off with naming himself as a Captain of a crew. He set down the chest and let out another sigh. The sun was now fully up so the villagers were probably awake by now while he was about to set out,’It’s time.

He looked up at the sky and prepared himself but it was then that someone called his name making him look around. Descending the rocky slope were all of the villagers coming to see him off. This made him smile and once again all of them said ‘Take care,’ to which he nodded and untied the rope of his boat from a rock and got on it. Arata didn’t want to drag this out any longer than it should be. He turned around to face the villagers and exclaimed,’Behold! Arata Mizushima’s journey now begins! The next time I return to this island I will be an infamous pirate! Farewell my dear friends and family!’ Upon finishing speaking he untied his sail and the began to move away from the island with the wind. His first destination: Dawn Island.
